Gas hydrate formation in porous ice-rich methane reservoirs upon injection of carbon dioxide: forward modeling

Formation of CO2 hydrate during injection of carbon dioxide into porous ice-rich methane reservoirs is studied using forward modeling in terms of heat and mass transfer. The obtained solutions describe the temperature and pressure patterns in the sediments and show that gas hydrate forms at three different regimes depending on the injected gas pressure and reservoir permeability. The results have implications for strategies of subsurface CO2 sequestration and safe disposal as gas hydrate in porous reservoirs, as well as for the conditions of CO2 hydrate stability.
