The notion of “lifestyle” is considered from the perspective of a geographical approach thus permitting a representation of the interrelationship between the lifestyle of the population and the life activity environment. The study revealed the causes for the uneven distribution of the youth group in the overall structure of population within the municipal entities of Irkutsk oblast. A rationale is provided for the selection of key territories in order to investigate the specific character of the youth lifestyle. For representing the influence of the social-geographical environment on the youth lifestyle the following qualitative indicators of the lifestyle are selected: employment, material security, and behavior models. An analysis is made of the lifestyle indicators for representatives of the urban and rural youth from urban and rural settlements differing in population size and socioeconomic status. Significant differences were revealed in the sectoral structure of employment of the urban and rural youth. An objective assessment of material well-being used the subsistence minimum in the region thus permitting identification of the levels of well-being for young people. The interview method was used in investigating the views of young people concerning the parameters of the life activity environment, material security, life aspirations, the degree of satisfaction with the social-geographical environment, and the possibility of realizing the requirements. The findings were used in identifying the types of youth characterized by differences in material standing, social status and life aspirations: “familial”, “laborious”, “enterprising”, “maximalist” and “careerists”. It is found that the location of a settlement with respect to the administrative center of Irkutsk oblast has a key influence on the lifestyle indicators under investigation.Keywords: urban and rural territories, youth in the population structure, comprehensive social-geographical investigation, life activity environment, objective and subjective assessment of the lifestyle.
