We suggest the technique for assessing the ecological situation in the regions of the Russian Federation, based on using the tension index of the ecological situation. It is established that the construction of this index is built upon aggregating the various indicators characterizing the factors that are responsible for the ecological situation, primarily with respect to the quality of human life. The index was constructed having regard to experience of similar ratings for other countries and regions, with the goal to minimize the number of indicators used in order to ease interpretation of results. An analysis is made of the ecological situation in the RF regions for 2011, and the most ecologically favorable constituent entities have been identified. The study demonstrated a significant difference between the employment of traditional absolute indicators and indicators assigned to the population, the region’s territory and the gross national product. The results have been visualized by the method of a color triangle as well as by identifying homogeneous (from the perspective of assessment) groups of territories. Data have been obtained, which can serve to monitor changes in environmental indicators, solve systemic regional problems, and to accelerate integration of the ecological interests into the economic policy. Keywords: ecological situation, ecological index, quality of life, Russian Federation.
