Use of GIS/ERS technologies in optimizing nature management within the basin of a lowland river (exemplified by the Polesia part of the Western Bug)

On the basis of the automated interpretation of Landsat images, field investigations and analysis of topographic maps, we determined the boundaries of geomorphological taxa for the Western Bug river basin: the floodplain, the terraces, and the interfluve surface. The analysis identified eight classes of lands and revealed quantitative and qualitative parameters of changes in the status of nature management within the Western Bug basin for 24 years. We suggest measures for an optimization of nature management, and resumption of the use of abandoned and other kinds of lands in agricultural production.
