We examine the procedure of identifying the altitudinal zonation of landscapes on the basis of analyzing digital terrain models and characteristic species of dendroflora by using Western Cisbaikalia (the model study area — Priolkhonie) as an example. It is suggested that some inhomogeneous (along the line of strike) layers of relief be subdivided into segments. It has been established that each layer of relief and its segment is characterized by an individual set (composition) of species of woody vegetation. This composition can be employed subsequently for indication of altitudinal zonation of landscapes. The distant approach that is suggested in this paper features higher mobility and higher accuracy when compared with conventional methods of identifying the zonation of landscapes.Keywords: altitudinal zonation of landscapes, layers of relief, dendroflora, digital terrain models, GIS methods.
