Long-term investigations into the macro-meso-micromorphology and physicochemical properties of tundra soils developing on sandy and loamy soil-forming materials revealed a two-layered structure of the profiles and attributes inherited from preceding evolutionary stages. For the purpose of conserving in an unchanged state the reference and unique rare soils as well as low-level peatlands retaining a book-like record of the past, and with the aim to guard against the anthropogenic pressure, it is suggested that they be included in the network of protected territories.
