The state and dynamics of soil-vegetation cover on the small islands of the Gulf of Peter the Great (Sea of Japan)

A comprehensive study into the current state of soil-vegetation cover has been carried out, with a reconstruction of the temporal dynamics of vegetation of four small islands in the Gulf of Peter the Great. The successional change in vegetation from polydominant broad-leaved to coniferous-broad-leaved forests on Engel’m, Lavrov and Shkot Islands was due to climatic factors at the beginning of the Late Holocene. The transition from coniferous-broad-leaved to sparse broad-leaved forest was caused by the anthropogenic influence at the present time. The coniferous-broad-leaved forests on Naumov Island on podzolized brown soils have persisted since former times, which is characteristic for anthropogenically transformed ecosystems.
