Influence of climate fluctuations on the runoff from the catchment of Lake Onega

Tendencies of current changes of climate on the catchment of Lake Onega are identified for the time interval from 1951 to 2000, and their possible impact on the hydrological regime of the water body is assessed. The study revealed the presence of positive linear trends of annual air temperatures, amounts of atmospheric precipitation and total evaporation, and the absence of a linear trend in series for the river runoff. A numerical estimate is made of the possible changes in the lake’s thermal characteristics and of the annual runoff from the catchment provided that the scenarios of variation of climatic parameters (ECHAM4/OPYC3) for the period into 2050 are realized.
