The evolution of a sea ice cover was modeled based on the statistical analysis of long-term observations of metric characteristics of ice cover in the Sea of Japan. The dynamic variables of the model are the area and the thickness of ice floes. The thermal processes causing gradual changes in the size and thickness of ice floes, occurrence of ice floes during the formation of the cover and their elimination at thawing are taken into account in this model. Processes of aggregation and destruction of ice floes, transition of ice of open areas to fast ice, processes of ice hummocking are also taken into account. The estimation of adequacy of the model to selective distributions of the areas of some thickness is performed.
