Massive ground ice in dislocated Quaternary sediments of Western Yamal

The paper presents the results of investigations of geological and cryogenic structure, chemical composition and origin of the tabular ground ice. The possible mechanisms of the massive ground ice formation are analyzed. The results of investigations show that the ice bodies have been formed inside the ground during the epigenetic freezing of sediments, which were lately subjected to folding. Morphological, mineralogical, and chemical features of the sediments and the ground ice indicate the possibility of intrusive origin of the tabular ground ice. It is shown that the formation of tabular ground ice could not be the cause of folding.
